Joey Kash. SATX'S Next Big Thing

ree

I'm gonna ask y'all to do a simple math equation. Before y'all freak out, don't worry, it is actually simple because trust me, I hate math too. What do you get when you add together four extremely gifted and seasoned rock performers into a group in San Antonio, TX? You get Joey Kash.

Exploding onto the scene within the last year, Joey Kash began making strong first impressions with the people of San Antonio, playing non-stop shows and familiarizing the city with their hard-rock, blues and energetic music. However, not every member of the band is originally from SA. Three out of the four members, Shane Breon (Lead Guitar), Ryan Brehm (Bass Guitar) and David Garcia (Drums) are all from or around San Antonio for nearly all their life but with Joey Kash (Lead Singer and Rhythm Guitar), the story differs. Born and raised in Philedelphia, PA, Joey has traversed a nomadic lifestyle all throughout his life, only recently settling in San Antonio. He says, "Joined the military and I have traveled all over the world. That is how I ended up here in San Antonio, TX. Currently stationed at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX ." However, members Shane, Ryan and David recount their upbringings saying, "I'm from a small town called Hondo, Tx but have lived around San Antonio Tx for the last 12 years or so." from Shane, and Ryan saying,"I grew up in Malibu California but bounced around between Cali and Texas until my teens where I remained in Texas and graduated from Boerne TX Highschool." With David also being SATX born and raised, the diverse hometowns everyone in the band hail from is not the only diverse part about this group.

After getting a chance to sit down with the group, I asked them, How did you all get into music?

Shane: "I grew up in a family that listened to a lot of music but nobody really played any instruments until my brother picked up guitar in his late teens, and being a few years younger than him I started beating on pots and pans and whatever makeshift drums I could come up with while he was learning guitar."

Ryan: "My dad was a lifelong heavyweight musician, he got me into playing music as young as I can remember."

David: "My family tells me stories of how I was drawn to songs and videos on the radio and tv as a toddler. People found out I played drums through MySpace videos I would post, I’ve been in bands ever since."

Joey: "In 5th grade I heard Nirvana’s album “Nevermind”, and Green Day’s album “Dookie” and I immediately wanted to start playing the guitar. I got my first guitar that year for Christmas and never put it down."

With all that creativity from such young ages and various influences growing up, it's not surprise that this group is bursting at the seams with talent and artistry. However, how do those different experiences mix and mesh into what Joey Kash's style is? Well, it all starts with the band's idols. For Shane, various musicians helped shape his musical upbringing from drummers like Shannon Larkin and Matt Cameron to guitarists like Joe Perry, John Mayer, Stevie Ray Vaughn and many more. To David, the hard rock bands from the 90s and 00s fed into exactly what kind of music speaks to him today (next time you see him playing his double bass drum, now you know where that love came from). Joey says, "I have a lot of influences for different reasons. Kurt Cobain and Billy Joe Armstrong are the reason I picked up a guitar. Along with Kurt and Billy Joe, add James Hetfield, Sully Erna and Brett Scallions to reasons why I wanted to perform on stage. Depeche Mode, The Cure, Fuel, Metallica, Godsmack, Nirvana and Green Day have all influenced song writing for me in so many ways." Whereas Ryan says, "Jack Bruce, Dusty Hill and Peter K Bawa."

While we've talked a bit about where this group is from, we've not shed any light on what this group treasures the most about being a San Antonio band. When asked what their favorite thing about being a SATX act, the group had the following to say,

Shane: "How connected the music circle is around here."

Ryan: "There’s a sense of community among local artists."

Joey: "The music we are creating isn’t the “norm” in this city. It turns heads, and I hope that it starts drawing crowds."

And turning it heads their music definitely is. Within the last few months alone, Joey Kash has already played in most major venues in San Antonio such as The Rock Box, VIBES Underground, Paper Tiger and more, along with a major interview by Voyage San Antonio in June which will be linked below. After being officially signed to BlueJay Records in September, Joey Kash is certainly attracting attention. But for the meantime, what is next for the band? "We are about to start recording new music." says Joey, "For now, you can hear older versions of the music at www.reverbnation.com/tempertrend The original name was Tempertrend, with a heavier rock sound." With plans to record new music, and possibly get a new group name, one thing is clear: Joey Kash is on the up and up in San Antonio. And ya heard it here first.
